A research paper is not just a long essay — it adds the burden of using other people’s work honestly and well, and a rubric for it has to grade that burden explicitly. The double weighting says the quiet part out loud: a research paper lives or dies on whether it asks a real question and answers it with credible, well-handled sources.
The row to watch is Research & Sources. A weak paper collects facts; a strong one synthesizesthem — putting sources in conversation, noticing where they disagree, and building an argument the sources alone don’t state. The top level rewards synthesis and source quality together, because ten shaky web pages are worse than three solid ones, and a string of quotations that never talk to each other is a book report wearing a lab coat. Pair that with Thesis & Focus, which asks whether the paper narrows to a genuine, answerable question rather than surveying a topic, and you have the two rows that actually distinguish research writing.
Citation & Format is its own row for a reason beyond tidiness: accurate attribution is the ethical core of research, and scoring it separately lets you address integrity without conflating it with argument quality. A brilliant paper with sources it never credits has a serious problem the grid can name precisely — a low Citation score and a conversation, not a silent deduction buried in the total. Decide in advance how you will handle genuine plagiarism versus honest citation errors; the rubric grades the latter, while the former is a separate matter of policy.
Most weak research papers were doomed at the question. “The causes of World War I” is a topic no student can answer in five pages; “Which single factor best explains why the July Crisis escalated into a general war?” is a question that forces selection, argument, and synthesis. The Thesis & Focus row rewards exactly that narrowing, so it pays to approve questions before drafting begins — half of grading gets easier when the question was sound to begin with.
Imagine a paper with a sharp thesis, a logical structure, and clean MLA formatting — but its five sources are each summarized in turn, one per paragraph, never cross-referenced. Thesis is a 4, Organization a 3, Citation a 4, yet Research & Sources is a 2, because the paper reports rather than synthesizes. With that row weighted double, the total honestly reflects a paper that looks finished but hasn’t done the central intellectual work — and the student learns that the next draft needs sources in dialogue, not just present.
