Standards-Based Grading With Rubrics: A Practical Guide

Standards-based grading (SBG) reports what a student can actually do against a defined learning standard, instead of accumulating points for completed work. Rubrics are what make that workable in an ordinary classroom: they translate a standard’s dense, official language into levels of proficiency a teacher can score consistently and a student can read before starting the assignment. This guide walks through what standards-based grading changes about how you build and use a rubric — from unpacking a standard into gradable criteria, to reporting a proficiency score as the letter grade most schools still require.

What standards-based grading (SBG) is

Traditional grading tends to blend a lot into one number: how many questions a student answered correctly, whether homework came in on time, how neat the poster looks, and how many points were deducted for a late submission. Thomas Guskey, one of the most widely cited researchers on grading reform, has argued for years that this blending is the core problem — a single grade that mixes achievement, effort, and behavior doesn’t tell anyone, including the student, what was actually learned.

Standards-based grading tries to fix that by scoring students against a specific set of standards — a state curriculum standard, a course learning objective — and reporting proficiency toward each one directly. Instead of “87%”, a report might show “Constructs an argument with relevant evidence: Proficient” and “Uses academic vocabulary accurately: Developing”. A rubric is what makes “Proficient” concrete and repeatable across students and assignments, which is why rubric design and standards-based grading are so tightly linked in practice.

Turning standards into criteria

Most standards are written broadly. “Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence” covers several skills at once — making a claim, reasoning, using evidence, organizing the response. Before you can grade against it, you need to unpack it into criteria specific enough to score on their own: a claim criterion, an evidence-and-reasoning criterion, an organization criterion, and so on. The short version: isolate the standard’s verb and its content, then ask what a student would have to produce as evidence that piece of it was met.

The common mistake is writing criteria around compliance instead of the standard itself — “included a title”, “stayed within the word count”, “submitted on time”. Those are reasonable classroom expectations, but they aren’t evidence of the standard, and folding them into an academic criterion muddies the exact signal standards-based grading is meant to produce.

Proficiency scales vs. points

Most standards-based rubrics score against a proficiency scale rather than a running point total. A common version, close to Robert Marzano’s scale-based work on standards-based grading, uses four levels: partial understanding even with help, understanding of the simpler foundational content, proficient understanding that meets the target standard independently, and understanding that extends beyond the target. How many levels you choose matters more than it looks; see how many performance levels a rubric should have for the trade-offs between a finer scale and fast, reliable scoring.

The reason SBG favors scales over points is precision versus validity. Points invite averaging: score 6/10 today and 8/10 next week, and the gradebook reports a 7 — a number that doesn’t correspond to any real level of skill. A proficiency scale instead reports where the student’s work sits right now relative to the standard, which is the information a standards-based report is supposed to carry. Schools that still need a percentage for a transcript convert the scale afterward, rather than starting from points.

Writing standards-aligned descriptors

A descriptor is only useful if it describes what the standard’s evidence actually looks like at that level, not how much of the assignment got done. Susan Brookhart’s guidance on rubric descriptors is the standard reference here: descriptors across levels should be parallel (the same criteria addressed at every level, just at a different quality), genuinely observable, and clearly distinct from the level next to it — a teacher scoring blind should be able to tell which descriptor matches a piece of work without needing to compare it to the others.

  • Proficient — “States a clear claim and supports it with at least two pieces of relevant evidence, each explained.”
  • Developing — “States a claim, but evidence is missing, irrelevant, or left unexplained.”

Same criterion, different quality, both anchored to the standard’s language rather than to word count or formatting.

Separating behavior from academic achievement

This is the piece of standards-based grading Guskey has pushed hardest on: keep the academic score clean. Effort, participation, following directions, neatness, and turning work in on time are all real and worth tracking — but folding them into the same score as “constructs a valid argument” means the grade no longer tells you whether the standard was met. A highly compliant student with weak arguments and a disorganized student with strong ones can land on the same number for entirely different reasons.

  • Academic (on the rubric): claim quality, evidence and reasoning, organization, accuracy.
  • Behavior (reported separately): effort, participation, timeliness, following directions, neatness.

The practical fix most standards-based schools use is to report the two separately: an academic proficiency score per standard from the rubric, plus a short “work habits” or “learning skills” rating — often its own 3- or 4-point scale — that covers effort, timeliness, and behavior. Keep that second rating off the rubric that scores the standard.

Reporting and converting to letter grades

Very few schools have fully replaced letter grades and transcripts, so most standards-based classrooms eventually need to convert scale scores into something a report card or gradebook can display. Two decisions matter more than the conversion table itself.

  • How repeated scores combine. Averaging every attempt across a term rewards early struggle and punishes growth, so standards-based guidance from Guskey and Marzano generally favors weighting the most recent or most consistent evidence over a straight average.
  • The scale-to-grade mapping. Decide it once, up front — for example, mapping a four-point scale to letter-grade bands — and apply it consistently, rather than converting each assignment one at a time.

However you convert, keep the standard-by-standard scores visible on the report itself, even alongside a single overall letter grade. That detail is the point of standards-based grading; collapsing it down to only a letter defeats the purpose.

Tools to build it

You don’t need new software to run standards-based grading — you need rubrics structured around standards rather than around assignments. A single-point rubric is a good fit: instead of writing out every level, you write only the “proficient” descriptor for each standard-based criterion and use the space on either side of it to note where a piece of work fell short or went beyond it. That keeps your descriptor writing focused on the one description that matters most, while staying flexible for feedback in either direction.

If you’d rather build the full multi-level scale described above, start from a blank rubric template and label each level using your scale’s own language instead of generic point values, then swap in the standard’s wording for each criterion. Either way, pilot the rubric against a few pieces of real student work before rolling it out, and revise any descriptor that two teachers can’t apply the same way.
